Getting a heavy vehicle licence is only the first step you have to take to become a long haul truck driver. But life as a long haul trucker is a totally different ball game — the long travel hours may mean getting paid more, but it may also mean less family time and more solitude. If you want to become a long haul heavy trucker, you should understand that every day presents an opportunity to learn something new.

Here are a few essential things you should know about before starting your career as a long haul trucker.

You'll have to be ready to be a team player.

While you are starting out, you will be put under team-training, whereby you will be under the tutelage of an experienced trucker. As a driver in team-training, you will be expected to learn about the ins and outs of the job, so that you can set out on solo rides once you are deemed to be conversant with how the job is done.

You'll have to get used to living in your truck.

Because you will be driving for long hours for many days, your truck driver's cabin will become your new home. Living in your truck can be quite lonely, and adjusting to this kind of life can be quite a challenge, especially if you have a family back at home. On the positive side, you won't have to spend lots of money on hotel or motel accommodation, as there is sufficient space have you to sleep in your driver's cabin.

You'll have to work hard to make your way to the top.

Every employer wants to hire and retain hardworking and dedicated workers — heavy haulage truck companies are no different. The amount of effort that you put in your employment will determine how quickly you graduate from the tutelage program and how you rise through the ranks to be considered one of the best in your company.

Generally speaking, most long haul trucking companies give their best truckers first preference when it comes to picking of assignments; hence, these truckers are also assured of constant workflow. Therefore, if you can prove that you are a hardworking individual that can be relied upon especially at crucial times, you can be sure of getting handsomely rewarded for your efforts. And, when it is time for your company to lay off some truckers, you will be sure of keeping your job!

Knowing what awaits you is vital to ensuring you make an informed decision regarding whether or not you should pursue a career as a long haul truck driver.
