4 Symptoms That Show Your Hyundai Shock Absorbers May Need Replacing

Automobiles are complicated things. Not only do you need to have a good understanding of the mechanical parts of the car, you also need to understand how to care for the exterior and how to diagnose and repair any problems. I do not work in an auto repair shop but over the past couple of years, I have received an education from my older brother. My older brother works as a mechanic so he knows an awful lot about how to maintain an automobile. Since I purchased my own car, I have been practising on how to keep it in good working order.

The shock absorbers on your Hyundai car are one of those components that are vital to ensuring optimal driving safety and comfort. But like many other car parts, your shock absorbers will wear and tear over time as a result of continuous use. When this happens, you will notice a significant decline in your car's safety and comfort on the road.

So, what are the obvious warning signs that it may be time to replace your shock absorbers? Here's how you see the red light.

Delayed stopping distance

Some motorists think that their brakes are solely responsible for stopping a car. Nothing could be further from the truth. As part of the vehicle's suspension system, shock absorbers help to provide maximum grip between the tyres and the road surface, especially when braking and cornering. If they are excessively worn, shock absorbers won't offer maximum rolling resistance — resistance to the movement of the tyres — in turn, leading to a longer stopping distance.

Loss of control when cornering

Your car tyres should quickly move in the direction you want when you are negotiating a corner. If your car swerves dangerously under cornering, it is likely that your shock absorbers are overly worn and therefore cannot provide a good grip between the tyres and the ground.  These symptoms can be life-threatening, especially on wet and slippery roads. So, it is important to have the issue checked by the mechanics at a reputable auto repair centre as soon as possible.

Shaking steering wheel

If you can feel shaking directly through the steering wheel, and you are not braking, your shock absorbers may be worn and need to be replaced. The vibrations can make your driving experience unpleasant but also compromise your safety and that of other people on the road. You need to avoid driving at high speeds in case you encounter this problem while driving. The vibrations could easily get more intense and lead to a fatal car accident.

Irregular tyre wear

Your car tyres should wear and tear uniformly. If you notice uneven wear on your tyres, that's a sign that your tyres are lacking maximum contact with the surface of the road, which can be as a result of bad shocks. This will affect your safety and comfort on the road. Hence, the issue shouldn't be left unchecked.

While the above-discussed warning signs could mean that your shock absorbers needs replacing, they could also point to other problems with your suspension system. To know what's wrong for sure, it is best to let a qualified mechanic check out the problem. For more information on Hyundai car parts and repair, contact a local professional.
